A
message from the Mayor of Georgetown:
A sincere welcome from the 343 residents of
Georgetown, the most progressive municipality for its size in the
state of Mississippi. I have been honored to serve as the Mayor or
Mayor Protem of Georgetown since March 11th , 1980. I find it a
wonderful experience to serve the Town of Georgetown, my wife’s
birthplace and our home since November 1st, 1978. I am convinced
that the future of our Town will exceed our past accomplishments. We
in the Mayor’s office are committed to making our Town an even
greater place to live, work and play; a place we are proud to call
home.
Perhaps Georgetown’s greatest
asset is its citizens. There is a true sense of community in our
Town. The government works closely with our residents and businesses
to promote the many services, activities, and benefits of
Georgetown. The Georgetown community is always supportive and happy
to join together.
I Believe We Must:
Continue to improve the
town by prioritizing short and long term goals. The grant system is
providing life’s blood to small towns; therefore we must be aware of
each new program and ready to apply.
* Maintain an
office that is responsible to the needs of the residents and
businesses
* Continue improving our infrastructure
* Revitalize and instill pride in our community
* Manage our city through specific goals, objectives, and
time lines.
Work in Progress: A new water well is in the construction phase and
should be on line by the middle of the summer.
Georgetown feature many
assets to enhance our community. These include:
1. The
Georgetown Telephone Company, which is a state of the art system,
that takes pride in providing the most advanced
services to its customers.
2. Four
churches of different denominations provide our worship service.
3. Union
Academy, an accredited private school has classes from pre
kindergarten through 12th grade.
4. Under
the leadership of an outstanding chief, 12 dedicated individuals
that have trained, accumulated equipment, established notification
systems and cut response times, man the volunteer fire
department/rescue unit. Whether fire or medical, your emergency will
be handled by professionals.
5. The
Robert W. Windom, Jr. Public Library is modern, equipped with 5
computers, staffed by highly qualified librarians.
6. A
well-equipped park with swings, merry-go round, and barbeque grills,
picnic tables, and a gazebo provided for everyone’s use.
7. A
ball field that can be used for many different activities. We hope
to have lights installed in the near future.
8. Three
water wells provide enough water for future growth. The town owns
both the water and sewer systems.
9. Entergy
Corporation supply electric power and Center Point supplies our
natural gas.
Georgetown is located in
Copiah County and is approximately 30 miles south of Jackson,
Mississippi. Our location is at the Intersection of Mississippi
Highway 27 and Highway 28. When you see the train and coal car you
know you have arrived.
Again, welcome to
Georgetown!
Sincerely,
Robert W. Windom, Jr.
